well that all went to shit, as readers of my other blogs will know. the singer was alex parks, and the talks were an email that is still sitting in my outbox. the drummer i got off with and then she said that she didn'[t want that to happen anymore and now i've not seen her for months. the other is ian and we're still very serious, in fact i'm moving in with him. i am now hoping to snare laurence's friend corey in on drums (which will wrap things up nice) and some more people to have an actual band.

can an open mike slot be called a gig? the appearance was somewhat scheduled, so we were down to play anyway, shame we were second on and not that many people saw us. us and we refer to laurance and myself, thom would have played but london road was sold out of children's quality keyboards and drum kits so he just heckled; tommy was busy working. we played love and midweek, logic being we should play as many of our own songs as we can as that's what people should want to hear, dropping dubstar's 'stars' from the set. people clapped! eagerly! at the bit in love when you think it's finished. midweek wasn't as good, but it's not as good a song anyway and works better electric. the girlfriend/bus joke didn't go down too well either. but as we worked out, people like shambolic. it's endearing. so we've now supported mj hibbett, who has supported half man half biscuit.

everyone should go to turds, because most people who play there are really great. last night included pog, robert from we am janet, a hilarious magician, and andy gibbard out of defunct indie-metallers strange by design, as well as the ubiquitous and absolutely lovely bobby mcgees. thank you everyone xx

i thought i'd enter us for the snickers kerrrang! download unsigned band battle competition, so i wrote a biography.

rebessica formed in spirit when grilly and laurence were jamming on a speed metal version of radiohead's 'myomatosis'; or perhaps when thom handed grilly back a heavily munged-up version of his song and mission statement 'love'; or maybe it was when the three artificial intelligence graduates realised they were never going to get girlfriends and should do something with all the free time that gave them (tommy joined later, their friendship cemented by a mutual respect of street fighter 2 and bal-sagoth).

taking their name from the super-hero bighead's unrequited love, rebessica play a baffling mixture of indie, math, prog, and turbo-death-grind-shit-the-bed-core, with influences as diverse as dubstar, system of a down, kelis, radiohead, aphex twin, dillinger escape plan, and scott walker (you know.. that kind of thing..).

i think that sums us up quite nicely.

no bullshit here, just an affectionate link to my lecturer's band.

since tom is clearly not going to write up last night's band practice, here's how it ploughed my furrow: thom being ill was great, coz it saved us two quid on the drumkit. playing along to minidisc-ed computer drums had it's perks, it felt really rock with no stopping, and l and i stormed through quinlank and midweek, but tom's lack of knowledge of the guitar parts held us back a bit. we can play through love all the way through, but the end of kid a top foxes even loz.

covers we actually played were ideoteque and stars (by dubstar... i heard it on blue jam and the years flooded away) and milkshake a bit but it's really a drum song.

next practice after easter. the next practice will be tight as claire ashcroft's un-nathaned rear-front-bottom. then we will book a gig - i have a 'post-exam' feeling about this.

rebessica destroyed my leg. or perhaps it was simon quinlank with his stupid weak lemon drink. or perhaps it was just grilly with his stupid riffage. there's a 'riffage' that should be in bold though. the riffs are coming together. all christmas we've been stuffing them full of pudding and now they've gotten fat.

lookit, rebessica finally has structure and coherence. riffs have beats. chords have bass lines. songs have titles (well, sort of). it's starting to make sense.

we were in the goth room. my memory of it includes red silken drapes, an ornate chandelier and a huge mosaic of naked people. i'm also going to remember a huge luxurious sofa, a drinks bar with free chocolate and a pool. more lush than scary innit. my memory rocks.

songs pretty much nailed include 'love', 'kid in the girl a top' [unsic], 'quinlank' and 'milkshake' (bash smash trash mother fucker). songs worth an honourable mention are 'pretty girls make cakes' (is this a working title?) and 'all the time a sunny beach' (once laurence actually learns the riff - writing in the third person reference). we also did 'idioteque' and 'myxomatosis' which both have potential (to be honest i think idioteque has the most).

practice #,1 1/12/04

a bit late to write this up, but nevertheless, this was a top first practice. we'd discussed the songs outside the practice room and everything so it was easy enough to be professional and just play the fuckers. i remember it was really hot, and in the amsterdam room of scream studios. we played some songs (the names of which appear in other posts) and had some jams. it was good.

the most important thing about this practice is that it was technically The Hindujas, the band being simply Thom and I (grilly). Laur was in London with his autophagic pop group. Tom Foreman was on hand to donate jammy dodgers to our cause, and provide helpful comments. the other most important thing was that we asked him to join the band. we are now a four piece, officially, if not yet in practice.

as for the actual rehearsal, thom and i put some more cement on love, kid a top, that joke, all the time on sunny beach (with me drumming?), made more inroads into quinlank and pretty girls make cakes, and tossed about with thom's 9/8 song and my new riff with the twiddly metal bit in (proper names coming soon).

scream studios' venue room (or something)
this practice went very well, and Andrew was on hand to help set up the microphones and fiddle with the levels. by the end of the practice, we had played 'love' and 'kid a top' both all the way through without stopping. we jammed on 'milkshake', played some of 'quinlank' (we all need to 'get our chops up' on that one) and developed 'pretty girls make cakes' quite well, although we don't have lyrics for them yet. the room was decked out in fairly cheap cyber-punk naffness.
